The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has announced adjustments to its Military Vehicle Check Point (VCP) in Bwiam Village, Foni Kansala District, West Coast Region. The move comes in response to a series of road accidents in the area, some of which were fatal.
Community-Centered Assessment
In a statement shared on their official Facebook page, the GAF explained that the decision followed a thorough assessment of the situation and careful consideration of community concerns. Senior representatives from both the armed forces and ECOMIG led the review, engaging directly with local authorities and residents to gather first-hand accounts and technical observations.
Stakeholder Consultations
The review also involved consultations with the Mobile Traffic Unit of the Gambia Police Force and other relevant stakeholders. These discussions highlighted a recurring pattern of accidents near the checkpoint, reinforcing the need for change.
Strategic Repositioning
As a result, the checkpoint has been repositioned to reduce accident risks while maintaining its effectiveness as a security measure. The GAF emphasised that all deployments are subject to continuous review to ensure they remain effective and aligned with the nation’s best interests.

Working in collaboration with ECOMIG and other security services, the GAF reaffirmed its dedication to protecting The Gambia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Armed Forces also stressed their commitment to a security approach that prioritises public safety, well-being, and confidence.
