By Online Media Association of The Gambia, 13th April 2026
The Gambia Online Media Association (GOMA) extends its sincere appreciation to all media houses, journalists, and media practitioners who stood in solidarity by boycotting the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) consultation held on 13th April 2026, in line with the resolution of the Gambia Press Union (GPU).
GOMA notes that only two media houses were present at the consultation, while the overwhelming majority of media stakeholders refused to participate in a process that undermines press freedom and media independence, as enshrined in the 1997 Constitution.
This collective action sends a strong and unequivocal message at a critical time as The Gambia prepares for the December 2026 presidential election.
It is important to highlight that none of GOMA’s members were invited to the consultation. Nonetheless, the Association had already resolved to boycott the process as part of a broader industry position opposing the regulations being advanced by the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services through PURA.
GOMA firmly believes that media solidarity remains the strongest safeguard against any attempts to impose state-controlled media in The Gambia. This unity is especially significant as the country approaches the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2026.
The Association is further concerned by remarks attributed to the Honourable Minister, indicating satisfaction with the media boycott. Such comments reinforce the perception that the consultation process is merely a procedural formality rather than a genuine effort to engage meaningfully with stakeholders and address legitimate concerns within the media sector.
GOMA reiterates that it remains open and committed to constructive dialogue and inclusive consultations that aim to strengthen press freedom, promote responsible journalism, and effectively address misinformation without compromising fundamental rights.
In this regard, GOMA aligns itself fully with the position of the Gambia Press Union following the emergency meeting held on 8th April 2026, where media groups, civil society organisations, and representatives from academia resolved that:
• The proposed state-controlled registration and accreditation regime grants unlawful and arbitrary powers to the government to determine who can practise journalism;
• The regime poses a serious threat to press freedom, freedom of expression, and media independence, while encouraging self-censorship and undermining investigative journalism;
• The registration of social media influencers and users with large followings will significantly restrict civic space and infringe on the right to freedom of expression online.
Consequently, stakeholders unanimously resolved to boycott the validation workshop on the following regulatory instruments:
1. Broadcasting and Online Content Regulations, 2026;
2. Broadcasting and Online Content Licensing, Registration and Authorisation Guidelines, 2026;
3. Journalists Registration Guidelines, 2026.
GOMA reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defending press freedom, protecting media independence, and upholding democratic values in The Gambia.
