Farm Radio International (FRI), a non-profit organization based in Canada, is on a mission to boost food security and rural development across Africa through the power of radio. Recently, they recognized the hard work of 10 African journalists for their contributions to this cause.
One of the honorees is Ousman A. Marong, a dedicated Gambian journalist and the General Manager of Vibes FM Radio Station.
Since its inception in 1979, FRI has partnered with 1450+ media partners in 38 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. These range from public, commercial, community, religious, NGOs and departments with radio projects.
Their goal is to provide interactive and locally relevant agricultural information to millions of small-scale farmers, emphasizing sustainable practices and adapting to climate change.
The George Atkins Communication Award is an annual honor given by Farm Radio International to individual radio broadcasters in developing countries who show exceptional dedication to supporting small-scale farmers and rural communities.
This award comes with a monetary prize and a Purpose Prize of $500 CAD, with winners receiving a certificate along with the cash prize.
The award celebrates outstanding radio programs that enhance food security, alleviate poverty, and cater to the unique needs of rural audiences. It’s named in memory of George Atkins, the founder of Farm Radio International.
Buttressing on his selection the soft spoken journalist said: “My approach to journalism, which I like to call the ‘journalism of necessity,’ is all about sharing African stories with the depth, dignity, and unwavering commitment to truth that FRI embodies,” Marong expressed.
“Winning this award wasn’t just a ‘personal milestone’ for The Gambian; it also serves as a ‘call to uphold the spirit of journalism that informs, inspires, and transforms.’ This recognition truly feels deserved. It wasn’t about favoritism or connections; it was earned through hard work. We all know that good things don’t come easily. Every success story has someone behind the scenes who has put in the effort to ensure that the final product shines.”
Busi Ngcebetsha, Manager of Just Communication Network, shared via email while signing this year’s awardees’ certificates that they (Farm Radio International) were genuinely impressed by Ousman A. Marong’s selection as one of the recipients of the 50 CAD prize.
