The first permanent pacemaker implantation in The Gambia was successfully completed last week by Dr. Suny Li and his team at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, a cardiology consultant from the Chinese Medical team in The Gambia.
The operation was performed on an 82-year-old woman who had complete atrioventricular block, according to the hospital communications unit.

A pacemaker is a small device that is inserted into the chest to help control the heartbeat and stop it from beating too slowly.
This ground-breaking operation has never been carried out before in The Gambia. Until now, all cases of this kind have been referred for treatment in other countries.
The hospital expressed its thanks to Dr. Li and his staff. Prof. Basil N. Okeahialam, a consultant cardiologist and post-graduate medical trainer, and members of the local EFSTH staff also observed the procedure.
