In a hard-hitting interview with journalist Fatou Jadama, the National Assembly Member for Foni Bintang, bakary .K. Badjie raised serious concerns about the government’s actions surrounding the sale of former President Yahya Jammeh’s assets. While defending his participation in the recent youth protest, the NAM stated, “I don’t regret joining — I’m a youth too.”
He also accused the government of showing unjustified supremacy by denying youths a protest permit and condemned the legitimacy of the investigative committee on the asset issue. He also took aim at the investigative committee set up to look into the asset controversy, voicing deep dissatisfaction. “I’m not happy with the committee. How can Abdoulie Ceesay, an NPP member, be appointed chairman?” he asked. “It’s like asking a thief to explain how they stole. It’s unjust and lacks credibility.” He went on to say the President should admit his failures and consider resigning, citing clear incompetence in his governing.
Hon. Badjie urged the youth to stay true to themselves and remain patriotic in the face of ongoing political challenges. He emphasized the importance of integrity, urging young people to not let anyone or any external influences sway their decisions, particularly when it comes to their votes. Hon. Badjie stressed that the future of The Gambia depends on the youth making wise, informed choices, reflecting their values and aspirations for a better nation. With a heart full of contentment, he encouraged them to remain steadfast and reject any temptation to compromise their principles, ensuring that their voices, votes, and actions contribute to shaping a brighter future.
When asked about the reasons behind forming his own political party, Hon. Badjie revealed that it was driven by deep pain and frustration. He explained that witnessing the suffering of his fellow countrymen — from the persistent shortage of electricity to the rise in murder cases, the dangerous journeys taken by youths seeking opportunities abroad, and the rampant unemployment — had become unbearable for him. He expressed that these issues were not just political problems, but personal ones, as they directly affect the lives of the Gambian people. His decision to create a political party, he said, stemmed from the need to address these critical issues head-on, with a sense of responsibility and urgency.
He also clarified that he has no plans of joining any party at the moment, emphasizing that he intends to remain independent in his political journey. This declaration underscores his commitment to standing firm in his beliefs and values, without being influenced by political affiliations or coalitions. His focus remains on addressing the issues that deeply affect the people of The Gambia and working towards real change, without being tied to any political party’s agenda.
He concluded by firmly stating that nobody can stop him from contesting in the 2026 election. With unwavering determination, he emphasized that it is up to the Gambian people to make the right choice, urging them to vote wisely. His message conveyed not only his readiness to continue fighting for change but also his confidence in the democratic process, urging citizens to take responsibility for shaping the future of their nation.
