The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) has acknowledged concerns raised by students of the University of The Gambia (UTG) during a protest on Monday over student welfare and essential university services.

In a statement, the Ministry recognised the importance of reliable transportation, catering services, water supply, internet connectivity and adequate learning facilities in supporting studentsโ€™ academic progress.

MoHERST said these issues require continued attention, effective coordination and practical solutions involving the relevant institutions.

In response to the concerns raised, the Ministry announced that the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez, will lead a delegation to the universityโ€™s Faraba Banta Campus on Tuesday afternoon to review the level of implementation of the demands made by the students.

The visit is expected to provide an opportunity for the Ministry and relevant stakeholders to assess progress made in addressing the studentsโ€™ concerns and identify areas requiring further action.

The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to working with UTG management, the Studentsโ€™ Union and other stakeholders to review outstanding issues and assess the implementation of existing interventions.

Highlighting progress in the higher education sector, MoHERST noted that significant efforts have been made over the years to strengthen tertiary education in The Gambia. These include investments in university infrastructure, particularly the development of the UTG Faraba Banta Campus, as well as initiatives in student support, technical and vocational education and training, research, innovation and skills development.

According to the Ministry, these interventions form part of ongoing efforts to expand educational opportunities, strengthen institutions and equip Gambians with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to national development.

However, MoHERST acknowledged that transforming the higher education sector remains a continuous process that requires sustained investment, institutional cooperation and responsiveness to studentsโ€™ needs.

The Ministry emphasised that constructive engagement among students, university management and government institutions is essential to resolving challenges and achieving lasting improvements.

It further assured students that their concerns would be heard and that appropriate follow-up action would be undertaken by the responsible institutions.

MoHERST reiterated its commitment to supporting the development of higher education in The Gambia, building on existing progress while addressing persistent challenges through dialogue, coordination and accountability.
